Moving Tips

PREPARING FOR THE BIG DAY

Moving Tips

Moving Tips: Don’t take it all. Before you pack, go through your belongings and find out what you can live without. Now would be a great time for a garage sale or give to charity.

If you are the Sellers, please leave the following on the kitchen counter or the new owners on possession day:

  • Extra keys (house, shed, garage, etc);
  • Garage door openers;
  • Mailbox key with number and directions to the mailbox;
  • A list of any codes the new owners may need for programming (garage, alarm, underground sprinkler system, etc);
  • Manuals for appliances, if available.

Please leave the home in clean and move in condition.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

One of the most important things is to change your address on your Driver’s Licence.

Don’t forget to inform everyone that is important of your move including:

  • Doctor/Dentist/Chiropractor/Specialist
  • Home/Car/Life Insurance
  • Investment Agents/Banks
  • Clubs/Associations/Charities

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?

One option is to hire movers that pack for you. The experienced packers seal, pad and itemize everything you own in a day or two. During the move, you’ll want to make sure you’re insured while your belongings are in transition. Many moving companies also offer additional insurance. After the van is unloaded and your stuff is unpacked, inspect everything and make note of any damage.

If you are doing the packing yourself, be patient. It takes time. You will want to ensure that each item is well packed to minimize damage during the move. Label each box in detail and if you know where it will go in your new home, put the destination on the box.

HELPFUL HINTS AND MOVING TIPS

  • Make arrangements with your mover as far in advance as possible. During the busy season, last minute calls may mean spending extra money or not being able to find a mover at all;
  • Discard unwanted items prior to the move so they don’t get mixed up with your belongings.
  • Remove cars from the driveway so you are not blocked in by the moving van. Arrange for street parking if needed;
  • Reserve elevators if moving in/out of a condo;
  • Keep children and pets from getting in the way of movers.
  • Pack heavy items in smaller boxes
  • Do not over fill boxes
  • You will also want to pack a box of essentials. These items you’re likely to use once you arrive in your new home. Items like:
    • Toilet paper
    • Soap
    • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
    • Paper towels
    • Garbage bags (a lot of them)
    • Paper plates, cups and plastic utensils
    • Hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, flashlight
    • Light bulbs
    • Snacks and drinks
