Whether accommodating family members or renting out to tenants, secondary suites contribute to North Vancouver’s vibrant and inclusive housing landscape. In 1993, the City took the progressive step of legalizing secondary suites in all single-family dwellings, aiming to expand rental options in lower-density neighbourhoods.

Secondary suites, considered self-contained accessory dwelling units, must comply with the Zoning Bylaw and are exclusively permitted if the property owner resides on the premises.

Each single-family property is allowed one secondary suite, which may be combined with an accessory coach house, subject to compliance with regulations.
